The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Region X (DENR X) reinvigorates a partnership with the private sector and community to reforest and develop 5.52 hectares denuded areas in Barangay Cugman, Cagayan de Oro City as part of the carbon sequestration initiatives of the region.

The move was made following the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between and among DENR X, Philippine Sanjia-Steel Corporation (PSSC) and Malasag Multipurpose Cooperative (MMC) to plant native trees on denuded areas on the proposed Protected Area in barangay Cugman.

The MOA is a five-year program that will be part of the contribution of the private sector in sequestering greenhouse gases through Enhanced National Greening Program (NGP) of the Department.

DENR X Regional Executive Director (RED) Henry A. Adornado recognized PSSC for complying the conditions cited in the Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) of the DENR-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB). He commended PSSC for the positive response on their support on the establishment of a carbon sink area.

RED Adornado is also confident that the partnership will be a successful one with the good planning and preparation of the activity and manner of implementation of the project and monitoring of concerned DENR office.

DENR-EMB Regional Director Reynaldo S. Digamo revealed that the establishment of PSSC’s carbon sink program will somehow offset the carbon emission of the company. RD Digamo congratulated signatories of the MOA, this would be one way of institutionalizing the partnership between the DENR, private sector and the community.

He elaborated that as stipulated in the MOA, the company (PSSC) will fund the project, the community will implement the project and the DENR particularly CENRO Initao will solely provide technical assistance and supervise the implementation of the project.

PSSC, President Antonio Lim was honored to be part of the program with the DENR and the Malasag Multipurpose Cooperative (MMC) and tasked as one of the signatories of the MOA on green-house gas emission reduction program. He believed that to protect the environment, tree planting is the most important method, with the valuable support of the DENR and MMC, together we can achieve our goals, he added.

For her part, President Delia V. Labininay expressed her appreciation to the PSSC and the DENR Region 10 for choosing their cooperative to be part of this endeavor, rest assured that they will perform their respective roles and responsibilities as stipulated in the MOA.
