
To further produce quality seedlings through the establishment and rehabilitation of nurseries particularly in Misamis Occidental, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Region X signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Northwestern Mindanao State College of Science and Technology (NMSCST) and the La Salle University (LSU)- Ozamiz City on July 4, 2022 in Tangub City and Ozamiz City respectively.
The MOA was signed by DENR X Regional Executive Director (RED) Henry A. Adornado, Misamis Occidental Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Rey F. Fernandez, and CENRO Ozamiz City CENR Officer Guilry D. Cabatuan; NMSCST President, Dr. Herbert Glenn P. Reyes, Dean of School Agriculture and Environmental Studies, Dr. Ferlyn Logronio and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Wilson Nabua.; and LSU-Ozamiz Campus President, Bro. Jose Mari L. Jimenez, LSU Chancellor Wenny M. Caseros and LSU Vice President for Advance and Linkages Dr. Elsie L. Dajao.
Under the MOA, NMSCST will allocate a 1,500 square meter land for the rehabilitation and operation of the nursery within the school campus and allow the DENR particularly CENRO-Ozamiz City to use the facilities for nursery operations, provide technical assistance, supervision and administration of the nursery for actual educational training.
RED Adornado stressed out that the collaboration will also provide opportunity for technology transfer and window for research. “Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB), the research arm of the DENR have studied and developed technologies and protocols that will help academic institutions in their research,” he added.
For his part, Dr. Reyes expressed gratitude to the DENR for the partnership and affirmed that through the endeavor, the institution could attain sustainable development and research advancement in the near future.
The DENR also forged a MOA with the LSU to help boost the production of quality seedlings of premium and indigenous species through in the establishment of seed production and seed bank area limited to 1,500 square meters in Misamis Occidental.
RED Adornado in his message personally thanked Bro. Jose Mari L. Jimenez and other officials for the support and partnership with the academe particularly LSU. This engagement will not only be confined with the establishment of nursery but also will open window of opportunity for research studies in the future. The support of the academe is an integral part in the continuous endeavor of protecting, conserving, managing, and proper used of the country’s environment and natural resources, he added.
On the other hand, Bro. Jimenez lauded the DENR for the partnership and assured that the university will partner the department from all its undertakings from ridge to reef to achieve its common goal in protecting and conserving Mother Earth.
Misamis Occidental PENR Officer Rey S. Fernandez formally closed the activity, he extended his heartfelt gratitude to the NMSCST and LSU officials for supporting the MOA. He said the collaboration between the DENR and the academe in Misamis Occidental will further strengthen the partnership in protecting our environment as a whole. #TayoAngKalikasan
