Dela Peña, a forester in DENR-Region 11, was gunned down in 2003 for his role in apprehending four container vans containing P1.4 million worth of illegally cut lumber at Sasa Wharf. ###

Senator Loren Legarda, chair of Senate Committee on Finance and Climate Change, commits "full moral, environmental and financial support" to all stakeholders for the enactment of the expanded NIPAS or National Integrated Protected Area System, encouraging stakeholders to work harder to increase the number of protected areas and rehabilitate the degraded ones through multi-stakeholder partnerships. Legarda made the commitment in her keynote speech during the 2nd National Protected Area Conference held 26 April 2016 in Mandaluyong City. ###

Lim and ASEAN Center for Biodiversity Executive Director Roberto Oliva (to Leones’s right) lead guests and participants in launching the Guidebook to Protected Areas in the Philippines during the 2nd National Protected Area Conference in Mandaluyong City. The guidebook features the country’s natural assests at their finest. It aims to highlight the environmental, historical, and cultural significance of protected areas, including ecotourism sites, and descriptions of unique and endemic species, geological formations and rich habitats. ###

DENR Undersecretary for Environment and International Environmental Affairs Atty. Jonas R. Leones underscores the contributions of protected areas in sustaining ecosystems services and benefits during the 2nd National Protected Area National Conference in Mandaluyong City.  Leones, who represented DENR Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje in the conference, likewise shared new paradigms and good practices in protected area management. Around 200 protected area managers, stakeholders from local government units, international partner organizations, representatives from indigeneous communities and civil society attended the event organized by the Biodiversity Management Bureau of the DENR. ###

Davis (right) lead the ribbon cutting ceremony to open the exhibit that showcases the biodiversity conservation programs of the DENR-BMB and its partner organizations, including Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation, GIZ and Foundation for the Philippine Environment. The exhibit is being held in conjunction with the 2nd National Protected Area Conference held in Mandaluyong City from April 26 to 28. Joining them are Biodiversity Management Bureau Director Theresa Mundita Lim (2nd from left), ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity Executive Director Roberto Oliva (left) and Ms. Universe 2013 3rd runner-up Ariella Arida. ###
