DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu describes the Manila Bay rehabilitation as his “most challenging” mission yet, but considers it not a mission impossible with the effort and full support of the 12 Manila Bay mandamus agencies and all stakeholders. Cimatu discussed the approved three-phase Manila Bay rehabilitation plan in a recent meeting with Manila Bay stakeholders. Cimatu is joined in the panel (L-R): former Senator Eddie Ilarde, Tourism Secretary Berna Romulo-Puyat, Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año, DENR Assistant Secretary for Anti-Corruption Atty. Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu inspects the Estero de San Antonio de Abad in Malate, Manila which drains to Manila Bay. The inspection of the estero is part of the forthcoming rehabilitation of Manila Bay which has been approved by President Duterte. Manila Bay has a fecal coliform level of 330 million most probable number (mpn) per 100ml against the standard 100mpn/100ml. Cimatu said identifying the sources of untreated wastewater that leads to Manila Bay is vital to restore it to Class SB level which means it is fit for swimming and other forms of contact recreation.

Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu (right) discusses with Atty. Jas Garcia, OIC-Public Recreations Bureau and Manila Zoo spokesperson, the need to put up a sewage treatment plant (STP) for Manila Zoo and ensure that no untreated wastewater from the facility shall be discharged to Estero de San Antonio de Abad which drains to Manila Bay and contributes to its pollution. Cimatu issued the instruction during his recent ocular inspection of establishments in Malate, Manila, on learning that the zoo facility has no STP.  Garcia assured the DENR chief that Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada will support the construction of an STP.
