Environment Secretary Roy A. The Blyth's hornbill (Rhyticerosplicatus), also known as the Papuan hornbill, is listed on the Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), an international agreement between governments and aims to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. ###

 

Found in several areas in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, the sulfur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) has the second largest number of smuggled wildlife that were confiscated during the buy-bust operation conducted by the Philippine Operations Group on Ivory and Illegal Wildlife or Task Force POGI, a composite team of wildlife enforcers from the DENR – Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB), the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), and Philippine National Police (PNP), in cooperation with the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), the 64 heads of the sulfur-crested cockatoo are “not necessarily threatened with extinction, but trading them must be controlled in order to avoid utilization incompatible with their survival.” ###

Puno for accepting the invitation to be the inaugural lecturer at the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources Distinguished Lecture Series in support of the Manila Bay and Boracay rehabilitation projects held Monday (April 15, 2019) at the Seda Hotel Vertis North in Quezon City. Prior to this, Puno also expressed his support to Cimatu’s leadership in DENR by saying that he is “always at the DENR Secretary’s beck and call.” ###

A large fig parrot (Psittaculirostrisdesmarestii) looks outside its cage, as if seeking for a renewed hope that awaits its fellow kind. Some 10individuals of the large fig parrot were among those seized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and its partner agencies during a recent wildlife law enforcement operations in Barangay Dahican, Mati City, in Davao Oriental, which resulted in the confiscation of P50-million worth of live exotic animals reportedly smuggled from Indonesia. Large fig parrot islisted in the Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), thus its trade must be controlled to guarantee its survival and protection. ###
