Presidential Proclamation No. 470, s. 2003 declares every third Saturday of September in the Philippines as International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) Day. In line with this, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 10 led the celebration anchored on this year’s theme “Battle for Litter-free Seas.”

ICC day celebration visions to have a balanced and healthy ocean which is free of trash and pollution in order to have a cleaner and healthier lives. Its mission is to help clean the seas, rivers, lakes and waterways, and to raise awareness on the growing marine debris problem.

DENR 10 observed the said celebration by mobilizing the communities in twelve (12) coastal barangays (Lapasan, Bulua, Macabalan, Gusa, Puntod, Cugman, Tablon, Bayabas, Agusan, Bonbon, Puerto and Bugo) of Cagayan de Oro City through a simultaneous coastal clean-up activity on September 21, 2019. This was attended by numerous volunteers from various relevant National Government Agencies, City and Barangay Local Government Units, private sectors and educational institutions, among others.

The activity gathered more than a thousand participants and abled to collect more or less 30,000 kilograms of non-biodegradable trashes scattered along the coastline.

DENR 10 continues its effort to encourage the coastal communities to be responsible in keeping and throwing their trashes in order to maintain the aesthetic beauty of our ocean and thereby protect the marine life ecosystem. #TayoAngKalikasan RSCIS MR No. 09-289-2019
