ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMPIONS HONORED

To launch existing restoration efforts and commend environmental champions who contributed to the reforestation within the Cagayan de Oro River Basin, the Cagayan de Oro River Basin Management Council (CDORBMC) conducted a ceremony dubbed as Greening Pinning on September 2, 2019 in Cagayan de Oro City.

Organizations with restoration efforts in the area symbolically pinned their logos on the Cagayan de Oro River Basin map signifying to take the responsibility in the rehabilitation and protection of the pinned location.

Organizations with exiting restoration efforts include national government agencies, local government units, business sectors, indigenous peoples’ organizations, civil society organizations, academe and the religious sector. The activity also welcomed new participants who committed to expand the reach of the project.

DENR 10 Regional Executive Director Arleigh J. Adorable represented the Agency by pinning the DENR logo on the map as representation of support to the sustainable management of river basin and the expansion of forest cover and reforestation efforts in Region 10. In his message, Adorable stated that from 2010 to present, DENR has invested 475 million pesos through the National Greening Program, Community-Based Forest Management and the Integrated Natural Resources and Environmental Management Project.

DENR 10 is also actively lobbying for the Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES), an alternative sustainable financial mechanism that engages indigenous and urban communities in the stewardship of natural resources. PES, as reiterated by CDORBMC Executive Director Dr. Hilly Ann Roa-Quiaoit, is the ultimate act of paying back to the environment as the source of all ecological services.

Archbishop Antonio J. Ledesma, SJ, D.D., Chair of CDORBMC called on all representatives from the public and private sectors to share their resources to care for the environment. Archbishop Ledesma referred to Pope Francis’ second encyclical, Laudatu Si, and encouraged everyone to care for our common home, the Cagayan de Oro River Basin.

Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno graced the activity and lauded the efforts of the CDORBMC in bringing together the different stakeholders to a common goal of protecting the environment.

The Cagayan de Oro River Basin Management Council is the governing body for the operation, supervision and management of the Cagayan de Oro River Basin established in 2010 through the initiative of Archbishop Antonio J. Ledesma, SJ, D.D. #TayoAngKalikasan (RSCIS MR No. 08-237-2019)

DENR 10 REGIONAL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR LAYS DOWN AGENCY’S PLANS AND TARGETS FOR CY 2020

Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 10 (DENR 10) Regional Executive Director (RED) Arleigh J. Adorable lays down the agency’s plans and targets for CY 2020 during its 1st Regional Expanded Executive Committee Meeting on January 8, 2020 in Cagayan de Oro City.

In compliance to the marching orders of DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu, RED Adorable underscored the necessity to create a Regional Environmental Law Enforcement Task Force which will be tasked to sternly enforce in the region the several environmental laws of the country particularly on forest protection.

Also, RED Adorable tasked the Director of Environmental Management Bureau Region 10 to identify as soon as possible an area where the Local Government Units (LGUs) can establish a clustered sanitary landfill and to require them to submit a sewage plan.

Following the success of “Challenge for Change Program: CDO Limpyo Dagat Contest” as a regional initiative of DENR 10 which the same was inspired on the efforts of the department to restore and rehabilitate the Manila Bay, RED Adorable plans to sustain this initiative by replicating it this time to the rivers of Cagayan de Oro City. The contest gained support from the LGUs in the city as well as from other stakeholders to protect and conserve the Macajalar Bay. As a result of this, RED Adorable likewise aspires to clone the same initiative to all other bays in the region.

RED Adorable underscored the implementation and supervision of NGP in the region by continuing its objective to increase its present forest cover of 22%. DENR 10 is targeting to correct all its polygons on the first quarter of 2020 through Social Cartography method using drones to identify the metes and bounds of areas developed.

For CY 2020, DENR 10 target for patent issuance significantly increased to more or less 10,000 titles which will be worked out in coordination with the municipalities in the region with existing Memorandum of Partnership Agreements with the Office.

DENR 10 seeks to be the best performing regional office based on what it has accomplished in the previous year and live its being an Environmental Awards for Governance and Leadership Excellence (EAGLE) Awardee for the year 2018 – the highest and most prestigious award that can be conferred to the most outstanding performers among the regional offices.

RED Adorable looks forward for the continuous effort of the Office to work together and accordingly find strength in unity among its employees. #TayoAngKalikasan RSCIS MR No. 01-019-2020
