FMB, DENR 10 INK MOA WITH HOLCIM FOR CARBON SEQUESTRATION

DENR 10 Regional Executive Director Arleight J. Adorable, DENR-FMB Director Nonito M. Tamayo and Engr. Tito L. Mendoza representing Renato A Baja, President and General Manager of Holcim Resources and Development Corporation (HRDC) signed the Memorandum of Agreement for the pilot project on Carbon Accounting, Verification and Certification System (CAVCS) on November 9, 2018 in Cagayan de Oro City.

CAVCS is a new initiative of the DENR to encourage the private sector to invest in projects that sequester carbon by formally recognizing forest protection, reforestation, and other forest restoration activities.

Director Tamayo, in his speech, shared that it has been the clamor of the private sector that a system be established to recognize forest cover projects for carbon certification. This project will be an opportunity not only for the government to harness available funds from the private sector, but also for the latter to showcase their commitment to forest protection and reforestation and to report their greenhouse gas mitigation and corporate sustainability.

RED Adorable expressed his gratitude to the Forest Management Bureau for selecting Region 10 to be the area for the CAVCS piloting in the Philippines. He also thanked HRDC for their active support to forest restoration initiatives and hoped for other companies to follow in the endeavor of protecting the environment.

Eng. Mendoza read the message of HRDS President and General Manager Renato Baja. Baja thanked the DENR and FMB for choosing their company to represent the private sector in the pilot project. According to him, HRDC will greatly benefit from the technical guidelines that the Department will be providing to properly implement forest conservation.

The Carbon Accounting, Verification, and Certification System (CAVCS) Pilot Project will be implemented in the Municipality of Impasugong, Bukidnon with a total area of 3,156 hectares. It aims to yield climate, community, and biodiversity benefits.

The recognition of carbon sequestration by the private sector is consistent with the Philippines’ commitment under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and other international agreements, conventions and protocols on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the country. #TayoAngKalikasan (Ana Mae Sumalinog) RSCIS MR# 11-307-2018
