DENR 10, PARTNERS FIRM UP STRATEGIES ON ANTI-ILLEGAL LOGGING CAMPAIGN FOR 2018

Strategies on the anti-illegal logging campaign in Northern Mindanao were shared by members of the Regional Anti-illegal Logging Task Force (RAILTF) during a year-end assessment led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Region 10 (DENR 10) in Cagayan de Oro City recently. 

Newly-designated DENR 10 Regional Director Arleigh J. Adorable said there is a need for the Provincial and Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices to further strengthen its partnership with the military, police, Department of Interior and Local Government and local government units in the enforcement of forestry laws. 

He recognized the efforts of the military, police and other partners in the crusade to protect and conserve our natural resources.  “I am thankful to our partners for their commitment and support to the DENR 10,” he added.  

Director Adorable also instructed the DENR 10 offices to maximize the work of the lawyers to pursue cases against violator of forestry laws.For her part, Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services, lawyer Florenda Lamason – Yap exhorted the PENROs and CENROs to conduct trainings to capacitate DENR partners in their work.  She further encouraged DENR 10 forest protection employees to continually coordinate with their partners to have an effective forest protection campaign.

As of December 15, 2017, the DENR 10 has confiscated logs, lumber, flitches and other forest products with a total volume 146,001.80 board feet (bd. ft.) and estimated value of which is P4,919,967.43.

The Provincial DENR Office of Misamis Oriental has confiscated 47,645.94 bd. ft. of  forest products with an estimated value of P1,625,254.60; Bukidnon with 34,865.72 bd. ft. with an estimated value of  P1,522,076.66; Lanao del Norte – 22,529.57 bd. ft. with an estimated value of P1,317,193.85; Misamis Occidental – 32,159.27 bd. ft. with an estimated value of P286,600.77; and Camiguin – 8,801.30 bd. ft. with an estimated value of P168,841.55.

A total of 35 units of trucks and other conveyances with an estimated value of P13,555,548.66 were confiscated regionwide.

Forester Nestor B. Agosto, Chief of the Enforcement Division welcomed the participants to the year-end assessment.  He said the RAILTF-10 has conducted meetings and deputized 25 personnel as forest protection officers. (RPAO # 12-433-2017)

DENR 10 CELEBRATES WORLD WILDLIFE DAY

To spearhead the campaign in educating the youth on the importance of wildlife, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Region 10 (DENR 10) through its Protected Area Management and Biodiversity Conservation Section (PAMBCS) conducted a symposium on March 2, 2018 in Cagayan de Oro City.

The symposium was attended by selected students of Macabalan National High School. The activity is in observance of the World Wildlife Day which is celebrated globally every March 3, the day when the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was adopted in 1973. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Big cats: predators under threat.”

This year’s celebration focused on big cats – Lions, Tigers, Leopards and Jaguars as well as their smaller cousins such as Cheetahs, Snow Leopards and Pumas, who are facing many different threats, most of which are caused by human activities. According to SeeTheWild Organization, roughly 80 percent of the 40 wild cat species are shrinking and sixteen of them are considered vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered.

In his lecture, Ranoray Love A. Noro, Chief of PAMBCS reiterates that wildlife is important for their roles in preserving the balance of nature in the ecosystem where they belong. He also presented the threats to wildlife which includes illegal trade and habitat destruction.

The students also learned about Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001, an act providing for the conservation and protection of wildlife resources and their habitats. They also had a chance to visit the Regional Rescue Center inside the DENR 10 compound where they encountered real wild animals like the Philippine Hawk Eagle, the Python and the Cobra.

Noro gave emphasis on teaching the youth the importance of conserving and preserving biodiversity, including wildlife, because the youth will be next in line in the stewardship of our mother Earth. Ana Mae Sumalinog (RPAO MR No. 03-57-2018)
