RD ANDOT URGES EMPLOYEES TO LIVE UP TO THE DENR MISSION

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 10 OIC, Regional Director Edwin B. Andot urged the personnel to live up to the mission of the Department. He challenged everyone to make it a personal commitment to care for Mother Earth.

He further sighted examples of simple things that could be done at home like rainwater harvesting and practicing solid waste management that will greatly impact in ecological advancement. He made this call during the Opening Program of the 2017 Environment Month celebration on June 02, 2017 at the DENR 10 covered court.

Quoting Evo Morales, he shared that “What human beings must know is that mankind cannot live without Mother Earth, but the planet can live without humans.” Thus, the theme of this year’s Environment Month celebration “Connecting People to Nature” encourages to reconnect and reconcile human activities and daily life decisions in the context of environmental protection.

The DENR Region 10 has lined up various activities for the month-long celebration which include a Sports Fest, several environmental symposia, and Pista sa Nayon. A tree planting activity will also be conducted for the Arbor Day celebration on June 26, 2017 at the Arboretum Area in Mapawa Nature Park, Malasag, Cugman, Cagayan de Oro City.

This year’s Environment Month celebration aims to increase the level of knowledge of the stakeholders on the various programs of the DENR, seek participation and encourage a closer working relationship within the DENR community.

The Regional Office will also host an ENR Documentary Contest that will be participated by the Local Government Units, Non-Government Organizations and Provincial/Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices. There will also be a Retirees’ Get Together event that hopes to gather loyal and dedicated employees that became a part of the Department’s many years of challenges and successes.

June was declared as the Philippine Environment Month, by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 237, signed in 1988, by then President Corazon Aquino. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is the primary agency, implementing various activities to raise awareness on the value of the environment, through its bureaus, agencies, partners and stakeholders. DENR 10 CELEBRATES WORLD WILDLIFE DAY

To spearhead the campaign in educating the youth on the importance of wildlife, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Region 10 (DENR 10) through its Protected Area Management and Biodiversity Conservation Section (PAMBCS) conducted a symposium on March 2, 2018 in Cagayan de Oro City.

The symposium was attended by selected students of Macabalan National High School. The activity is in observance of the World Wildlife Day which is celebrated globally every March 3, the day when the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was adopted in 1973. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Big cats: predators under threat.”

This year’s celebration focused on big cats – Lions, Tigers, Leopards and Jaguars as well as their smaller cousins such as Cheetahs, Snow Leopards and Pumas, who are facing many different threats, most of which are caused by human activities. According to SeeTheWild Organization, roughly 80 percent of the 40 wild cat species are shrinking and sixteen of them are considered vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered.

In his lecture, Ranoray Love A. Noro, Chief of PAMBCS reiterates that wildlife is important for their roles in preserving the balance of nature in the ecosystem where they belong. He also presented the threats to wildlife which includes illegal trade and habitat destruction.

The students also learned about Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001, an act providing for the conservation and protection of wildlife resources and their habitats. They also had a chance to visit the Regional Rescue Center inside the DENR 10 compound where they encountered real wild animals like the Philippine Hawk Eagle, the Python and the Cobra.

Noro gave emphasis on teaching the youth the importance of conserving and preserving biodiversity, including wildlife, because the youth will be next in line in the stewardship of our mother Earth. Ana Mae Sumalinog (RPAO MR No. 03-57-2018)
